On Siegfried Sassoon

I've had a couple of people ask me why I'm interested in Siegfried Sassoon, so I thought that I would explain. I was listening to the radio (the English commercial classical music station Classic FM for those who are interested in these little details) one day and heard a poem which really got my attention. I made a note of both the title and the author of this poem, and kept my eyes open for a volume of poetry by this Siegfried Sassoon chap when I was in the local second hand bookshop. One day I found a slim volume containing the poem - which was
The Grandeur of Ghosts incidentally. I bought the book, copied out the poem and pinned it above my desk, and thought no more of Sassoon for several weeks.

A few weeks later however, I decided to read some of the other poems in the book, and found that this Sassoon had been in the First World War. I then bought a copy of his collected War Poems, in the front of which was a biographical table. I decided that I wanted to know about Sassoon's involvement in the War, so I asked in the local library for a biography of Sassoon, and they found me Michael Thorpe's book - Siegfried Sassoon : A Critical Study (Oxford University Press (1967)). I discovered that no-one had written a more recent biography than Michael Thorpe's. I thought that this lack ought to be supplied, and so I took it into my head that I would write a new biography of Sassoon. I began the research in 1995, but owing to the fact that I have been working full time I have only got roughly half way through the research process. 1997 and 1998 saw the publication of two new biographies and another new one was due out in September 1998 (it finally appeared in June 1999). However I believe there will still be room for my biography in the market - but of course, you'll have to wait until it's published to find out if I'm right ! I am hoping that I can finish the research after I complete my degree and then get the book written and published soon after.
