Music from Behind the Lines - Cecil Coles Cecil Coles was born in Scotland in 1888 and died of wounds near the Somme on April 26 1918. He had signed up with the 9th London Regiment in 1915 and was sent to France, from where he frequently corresponded with Gustav Holst (amongst others). In 1918 he volunteered to help bring in casualties from a wood and as he returned two of the stretcher bearers were killed and Coles was fatally wounded. He was fortunate in that he was unaware of how serious his wound was - he hummed some Beethoven as he was carried away from the scene, and he asked if the wound was likely to affect his piano playing. The medical officer believed he died of the shock of his wounds. The manuscript of the title track was sent to Holst by Coles in 1917; it was spattered with mud and blood. This album was made possible by the work of his daughter Penny, who never knew her father, and she was too shy to ask her music teacher at St Paul's School for Girls about her father. Her teacher was Holst. Buy Behind the Lines from Amazon UK.
