I realised that probably there are students of WW1 literature who do not know all the details of what happened when during the First World War so I offer this chronology in the hope of providing those details. If anyone feels I have left something of major importance out, do email me, and I will amend the chronology but I have tried to include everything. I have not gone back into the mists of time for the start of the war - being an historian I am aware that one could go backwards a great many years from 1914 to say where the war began - I suggest you read histories of the First World War for that. I have also included publication details for poetry collections and other relevant dates for the literature side of the War.

Return to top(This chronology was compiled by Michèle Fry, 1999. To compile it I referred to Bernard Bergonzi : Hero's Twilight (Carcanet, 1996) for literary dates, and Stuart Robson : The First World War of the Longman Seminar Studies in History (Longman, 1998) and Ian Hogg Hutchinson Pocket Dictionary of World War 1 (Helicon, 1994) for the historical dates. I may extend this with more dates relating to the poets at a later stage.)
